A Gift
Ten years ago, I wrote a good man a story for his 30th birthday. Today is his 40th, so I think another story is in order.

Maelstrom Fanfic, no less!
For many years after, the tribes of the south reported seeing a small, harmless group of Northerners wandering ever further into the interior. They tell stories of all the things they've seen and hug just everybody, and can be identified by their distant cries of "ooh, what's that over there?"

One of the avians in the group tells fortunes, and talks affectionately about some Northern god called the Weaver. She's always, always happy to officiate at weddings, bonding ceremonies and other unions.

The other things all the reports agree on is that she's very happy.

The Turnip Lady
The ever delightful elektrobard was given a writing challenge. It's called the Turnip Princess Challenge, and the challenge is to rewrite a newly discovered fairy tale in the writer's own style. The full details are on his wordpress, which is well worth checking out for the non vegetable-royalty stories as well.

I wasn't going to resist a thing like that, was I?

Unexpected Merlin Review
Because the season premier of Merlin was on after the season finale of Doctor Who, I still had the Notepad file open. This is what happened.

Once again, handsome young men gather for my amusement. As it should be.Collapse )

I don't think I'll be doing any more reviews for Merlin. I like the series well enough, but I tend to watch it passively rather than shout things at the screen.

*No, wait, hang on, if it's a war fought all along the watchtower the reaches of time and space, how can it be the last Timewar? I mean, I get that when the Time Lords were enforcing a linear version of history that would have been valid, but since they're taken off the board causality is now anyone's game.

Calling all writers!

Here's a chance to use your talents to do something really great for the Red Cross, to help with their famine relief efforts in East Africa.

Write an original short story - any length, any subject, taking inspiration from the theme "hunger" as much or as little as you like. We'll accept submissions in any genre, but particularly welcome horror, noir and fantasy to match our October release date, and our provisional title - "Horror for Hunger" Don't feel your story has to be too serious, either! We'll also consider original poems and artwork - every little helps...

Copyright remains with the author, though by submitting a story you allow us to e publish your story and distribute it for free to charity donors as part of this project. We might tidy up spelling and punctuation, but will not edit for style and content.

Calling all fans of genre fiction!

Once we've put our amazing collection together, we'll be sending it out as a thank-you to those who donate whatever they can afford to the red cross via justgiving.com (drop us an email to let us know you've chipped in). Watch this space for details!

So are you in?

Email judith dot reid at doctors dot org dot uk to discuss anything you like, let us know your ideas for submissions or to get involved any way you like. The deadline for submissions is 31st August.

There's four mushrooms in my risotto, and it looked rather gorgeous.

Good grief, I've forgotton what an utter pain making risotto from scratch is, and why I don't usually bother unless I love someone. The result is wonderfully textured, but the bit tasteless. I suspect this is because I simply boiled a kettle rather than made stock, but I did the crucial thing with risotto- I stirred like buggery. Still, there's oyster mushrooms and pied mouton mushrooms and chestnut mushrooms and and chanterelle mushrooms, and they're all so autumnal and lovely in their starchy speckles of pudding rice.

I'd also forgotten how horrible root beer is. Ugh. It'd the same bottle and on the same shelf as the dandelion and burdock, and I wasn't concentrating. Ack, ack, ack.

ETA: Holy shit, this secret has affected me badly. I thought that was just my mother who said those words.
